Street Van

Counselling

Street Vans

The Street Van (SV) ministry primarily aims to provide information (on drugs and other lifestyle issues), support (emotional, friendship, someone to listen to etc), and referrals (putting people in touch with agencies that can support them in their situation).

Our target is street present youth, broadly defined as between the ages of 12 to 25, and  physically present in public space (i.e. they do not have to be ‘homeless’ etc).  We do not, however, exclude or ‘not talk’ to people outside the criteria, the target group is simply the group we are particularly concerned about and are looking for.

The standard night is a mixture of driving around looking for young people, and setting up and engaging with people.  When we set up, we typically open the back of the van and serve tea, coffee, milo, donuts etc as a draw card and icebreaker.  Our teams are not confined to the van though, and will sometimes abandon it and go for a walk.

We currently operate in Albany, Perth, Rockingham and Geraldton on Friday and Saturday nights, operating from 8.00 pm to 2.00 am.  Each van consists of a Leader and crew of 4-5 volunteers.  An average of 100-200 people come into contact with us through the Street Vans each week.

The Street Outreach Program is a Mobile Referral Aid Centre who reach out and assist those members in our society who are homeless, in moral or physical danger and those who are addicted or likely to be addicted to both  legal  and  illegal  drugs.   The  primary focus is on young people, however  we will respond to all those who are in need.

Our aim is to be where the young people are in their surroundings, and establish  friendships  and  trust so that we can assist them towards a healthier drug free lifestyle.
